59ft PERRY 2006

Annapolis, Maryland

Bidding Closed | Sold

Free Range Chicken is a custom Bob Perry yacht that was commissioned by the seller and designed to be a comfortable blue water circumnavigator while also being a competitive long-distance ocean racer achieving 200-mile days. Built by Westerly Marine, the California builder known for high-quality racing and performance cruising yachts such as Santa Cruz Yachts. As a testament to Westerly’s high-quality construction, Free Range Chicken was the third custom yacht built for this seller following the commissioning of his custom Perry 55 (1994) and custom Santa Cruz 50 (1998). The hull of FRC is made of pre-impregnated high-strength epoxy E-glass laminate with Airex foam core and an outer layer of Kevlar/E-glass hybrid, with the structural grid then reinforced with carbon fiber and vacuum bagged and oven-cured at 160F. This created an ultra-strong hull, designed and built to withstand the ocean’s forces while distributing all rig and foil loads throughout the entire structure.

The deck was built using a combination of biaxial cloth with unidirectional E-glass reinforcements. The deck is foam cored, except at load points where end-grain balsa is used. The bulkheads are foam cored, with E-glass reinforcements, and then vacuum-bagged.

The keel was built as one would expect, for maximum performance and cruising ability, she draws 8′ 6′ and built of lead/antimony. The rigging is attached to connection points in the deck which are attached to the structure of the boat by carbon-fiber strapping – no traditional chain plates to leak. Thanks to the hard dodger there is ample room to install solar panels on the roof if desired, and davits could be installed on the transom as well.

Free Range Chicken was designed by Perry, with the insistence of the 6’2” seller to be ‘man-sized’. The interior is voluminous and has a raised saloon with large windows. In particular, the seller wanted the windows to be at a height that he could easily see the outside world while inside the yacht. The hard dodger also provides excellent visibility and protection and is fitted with a removable three-sided enclosure. The decks are clutter-free and there are plenty of handholds and protection to move about while underway. The storage is massive thanks to a large sail locker that doubles as a crew cabin and a full beam lazarette under the cockpit.

Inside you will find a completely finished cruising yacht, with a very spacious salon, galley and navigation station. Forward is a nicely appointed master stateroom with a centerline queen berth, and aft is a second cabin with a double berth. The master stateroom features an ensuite head and a separate shower compartment. Four-zone air conditioning with reverse cycle heat for maximum comfort, as well the master stateroom has a DC-powered heating system for use without the need for a generator. The salon has two drop-down dinettes to form berths and a workstation. In the port aft of the yacht is a well-equipped workroom with storage for tools and a bench and easy access to the mechanical room for much of the major systems aboard. To the aft of this room is the interior access to the lazarette through a hatch in the bulkhead.

Fitted with high-quality equipment such as the Yanmar 4JH3-DTE, Cummins Onan 11.5kW Genny, Newport Spectra water maker, Leisure Furl boom, etc., she is cutter-rigged with twin helms, includes backup rudder, watertight bulkheads, and has a complete workshop. A veteran of many notable long-distance races such as the Transpac, two Pacific Cups, San Diego to Puerto Vallarta, Los Angeles to Cabo, two Marion to Bermuda, Newport to Bermuda, Annapolis to Newport, and two Salty Dawg Rallies, Free Range Chicken has all certified equipment and is ready for immediate long-distance cruising.

Items excluded from the sale: defibrillator, clothing, DeWalt electric drill motors and accessories.
